One of the most underutilized parts of the human body is the Pinky Finger. This is especially true for many guitar players. When first staring out on the journey to learn beginner guitar, you must learn to use your left hand pinky finger. Many guitar players only play chords and scales with there first three fingers. And yes, there are some great guitar players who only use there first three fingers. Many of these professional guitar players would begin learning with there left pinky finger, however, due to years of playing the guitar one way it can be difficult to break years of guitar habits that have been formed over the years as an experienced guitar player.Â
You, however, the beginner guitar player, have a choice right now to make. The choice is to become a great guitar player that uses the left hand pinky comfortably all the time.  Before poor long term habits occur, begin practicing and playing your guitar right now with your left hand pinky. Pinky power playing will reap you guitar playing benefits for years to come as you learn beginner guitar.  Â
There are two simple ways to incorporate your left pinky as you learn beginner guitar.
1. Practice Chords that require you to use your left pinky finger
2. Practice your scales using all four left fingers.
1. Practice Chords that require you to use your left pinky finger: There are many chords that require you to play with your left pinky finger. Some of these include full fingered bar chords. By changing your finger positioning around you can practice common chords with your pinky such as A major or G major. Another great way to get your pinky involved with chords is to learn some jazz guitar chords. Many Jazz chords require full usage of your left hand.
2. Practice your scales using all four left fingers: From this point on never play scales with just three fingers. Play all of your scales with all four of your left hand fingers. By playing all guitar scales with all four left hand fingers you will become a more technically proficient guitar player. You will also be able to play guitar scales at lightning speed, or super slow scales for cool sounding melodic riffs.Â
