Fight Muscular Dystrophy with Mamsagni Rasayana
The muscular dystrophies are a group of genetic conditions that are characterised by progressive muscle weakness. Two of these types affect only males, with rare exceptions. Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) affects about 1 in 3,500 males. Becker muscular dystrophy (BMD) affects about 1 in 30,000 males although this may be an underestimate due to its variable severity. DMD and BMD are due to different changes in the dystrophin gene, which contains information for a protein that is important for muscle cells to work properly. Ayurveda consideres Muscular dystrophy as a disease condition of Mamsa-Vata-kshaya related to beeja dosha and impairments of Mamsagni (muscle enzyme). It involves deranged Vata and subsequent degeration of muscles and structures related to it. Ayurvedic scientists carefully consider this condition as adibala-pravrit Mamsa-Vvata-kshaya due to srotorodha (? Sarcolemma membrane defect). There is depletion of Mamsagni paving the way of ama formation. It is followed by vitiation of kapha dosha. While srotorodha produces hypertrophy in particular region, it also manifests as first prokopa and then depletion of Vata element. This complex pathogenesis is responsible for progressive wasting and necrosis of the affected muscle fibres.
Ayurvedic treatment with Mamsagni Rasayana might slow or stop the progression of muscle degeneration. So far 55 patients of Duchenne type, Bucker type and Limb-Girdle type of patients investigated with very promising results such as (i) weight loss (ii) Decrease in blood CK level (iii) Relief in Pain and Stress (iv) Decrease in walking difficulty (v) Further check on muscle wasting and contractures.These results suggest that there is check on further muscle destruction. The Mamsagni Rasayana is supposed to boost Mamsagni at muscle tissue level. It balances the Vata derangement due to ama and thus retards the muscular degeneration due to ama (fat deposition). Ayurvedic experts said the Mamsagni Rasyana is new hope in the long term management of Muscular dystrophy and it could lead to new treatments to fight the disease.
