Collector's Classics

Collector's Classics

$13.98

This generous 20-track collection of Jacob Miller's solo work is not only a sumptuous entry into the late star's oeuvre, but is arguably the best roundup of his work available. Collector's Classics bundles up the entirety of the artist's 1978 solo Jacob "Killer" Miller album, itself a masterpiece of roots rockers, chock-full of seminal numbers. The high point was the classic "Forward Ever," but of equal note are other such superlative dread numbers as "Lamb's Bread Collie" and "80,000 Careless Ethiopians." The phenomenal "Shaky Girl" and the rocksteady soul of "Mrs. Brown" are of the same caliber, as is the sizzling autobiographical title track; then again, nearly every track is just that. Some, but not all, of Miller's follow-up album, 1979's Wanted (not to be confused with the Wanted More album), is also rounded up. The criminal omission is "Peace Treaty Style," but you do get the superb "Healing of the Nation" and "Standing Firm," another pair of crucial dread offerings. The rest of the set helpfully duplicates a clutch of songs from the long-deleted Dread Dread album, which itself rounded up another batch of hits, and thus listeners are treated to such classics as "Tenement Yard," "Tired Fe Lick Weed in a Bush," and "Roman Soldiers of Babylon," while in Miller's hands even a lightweight love song like "Suzie Wong" sounds fantastic. Still, this is not all the Miller one needs; the RAS label's Who Say Jah No Dread, which compiles all the songs the singer cut for Augustus Pablo with their equally seminal King Tubby dub versions, is also a must-have. Between the two sets, most fans will be more than satisfied. However, so powerful is this collection, many fans will be encouraged to search out the few remaining greats to be had. ~ Jo-Ann Greene, All Music GuidePerformers: Bo Peep - Guitar; Sly Dunbar - Drums; Bernard Touter Harvey - Keyboards; Ian Lewis - Bass, Guitar; Roger Lewis - Guitar; Calvin McKenzie - Drums; Jacob Miller - Bass, Vocals; Mikey Rastar - Bass; Robbie Shakespeare - Bass;

Back in '93 I paid about $20 to get in and hear the last few songs by a group called Polytown. I had heard none of their music, but knowledge of the lineup allowed me to make such a spontaneous decision. The Polytowntrio was Terry Bozzio (drums), David Torn (guitar) and on bass, Mick Karn (Japan). I never missed that twenty spot. Two of its tracks, "Bandaged By Dreams" and "Red Sleep" are presented in this compilation of Mick Karn studio material. Four other recording sessions are sampled. One, is a previously unreleased piece entitled "Drawings We Have Lived." This is left over from the Tooth Mother creation. There are two alternate versions from the Bestial Cluster sessions. They are the title track and "Liver and Lungs." Also brought into play is Andy Rinehart's Jason's Chord and the Lonely Universe album from Michael White and Michel Lambert. Both recordings featured Karn prominently. The two common denominators here are multi-instrumentalists Karn himself (bass, vocals, bass clarinet, alto sax, keyboards and more) and Torn(guitars, mandolin, koto, electric sitar, Hammon B-3 and more). Sixteen other musicians contribute to the aggregate material, including keyboardist Richard Barbieri (Japan, Porcupine Tree), vocalist Natacha Atlas and more. In Karn's hands the bass is a fluid, melodic instrument of depth and extensive vocabulary. The material here is rich in intricate arrangements and diverse presentation. Any serious fan of progressive world music, experimental rock or the further possibilities of bass-led rock owes it to themselves to acquire this collection. ~ Tom Schulte, All Music GuidePerformers: Terry Bozzio - Bodhran, Drums, Dumbek, Percussion; David Torn - Banjo, Guitar (Acoustic), Guitar (Electric), Harmonica, Koto, Loops, Mandolin, Organ (Hammond), Oud, Percussion, Saz, Sitar (Electric), Slide Guitar, Voices; Mario Argandona - Vocals; Natacha Atlas - Vocals; Richard Barbieri - Keyboards; Gavin Harrison - Drums, Percussion; Jakko M. This is a well-crafted album from longtime studio ace Louie Shelton. As the title suggests, the emphasis is on Shelton's guitar work, and this man can play. Though obviously tailored for the contemporary/smooth jazz market, Guitar has much more oomph than is typical in this genre. The arrangements are tight and consistently hold the listener's attention with a variety of textures and rhythms, and the guitarist displays dazzling technique across a broad stylistic range. He plays octaves à la Wes Montgomery and single-note runs that put most hot-shot rock guitarists to shame. This is a release with many treats in store for the connoisseur of instrumental pop/rock, groove jazz, contemporary jazz, and just plain great guitar playing. ~ Jim Newsom, All Music GuidePerformers: Abigail - Vocals; Christopher Bogan - Keyboards; Kerry Buchanan - Drums; Craig Calhoun - Bass; Sunil DeSilva - Percussion; David Fennell - Keyboards; Leon Gaer - Bass; David Jones - Drums, Percussion; Sam McNally - Keyboards, Synthesizer; Larry Muhoberac - Keyboards; Andrew Oh - Saxophone; Brendan St. Ledger - Organ; Louie Shelton - Guitar, Keyboards; Chad Wackerman - Drums; Calvin Welch - Drums
